Dehydration from not drinking enough is bad for everyone. It's often worse for someone living with dementia. Dehydration is a leading cause of hospital admissions and a factor in the occurrence of urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Ulla is smart, simple and stylish. Pop it around any bottle, glass or mug and it will blink brightly to draw attention to the drink and encourage regular hydration.

No buttons, no set up. Ulla is designed to make it incredibly easy to use in a range of environments.

Ulla is easily mounted on water bottles of all sizes and materials in seconds. It can also be attached to ordinary glasses and mugs.

How it works

The sensor’s hydration interval is programmed in a way that reminds people to pick up their water bottle at least twice per hour – that's 16 times in a typical 8 hour day.

A typical day with Ulla:

In the morning, Ulla will detect movement and light up, reminding someone to top up the drink.

When the drink is full and placed back, the hydration interval is set on and in 30 – 40 minutes interval, Ulla will remind you to drink water.

The light will blink only if you forgot to drink 30-40 minutes. If you have picked up the bottle in this period (Ulla knows this because it has an in-built tilt sensor), it will not blink and will remind you to drink 30-40 minutes after your last sip.

When there is no movement in the room, Ulla will automatically go off after 2 intervals and wait for you to come back. When completely dark, Ulla doesn’t blink even if there are movements around.

A simple but really clever gadget

Mr. James Ashwell, Founder of Unforgettable

Dehydration is a massive problem for people with dementia – it’s one of the main causes of hospital admissions. But I know from caring for Mum how difficult it can be to make sure your loved one is drinking enough. There are several different ways to address the problem of dehydration and this little gadget is one of them. I’ve actually had it on my desk for a year testing it…and it works! The idea is that you put it around any glass, mug or bottle and a light will flash or blink every 30 or 40 minutes to remind you to drink. The flashing light may prompt a person with dementia to drink, but it also acts as a reminder to their loved one or carer that they haven’t had enough to drink. This is a simple, low cost way to overcome one of the key challenges of the dementia journey. I think it’s fantastic.

Pleasant looking, seemed like a good idea. In practice, my husband did not understand what the flashing light meant, and in some settings was hard to see

My mum is in the mid stage of dementia and although her dementia has progressed a little she still recognises me and her loved ones so I had thought this device would be useful to her as she need to be reminded to drink more. However both myself and her carers find it doesn’t make any difference. She doesn't make the connection between what the flashing light means and doesn't relate to it at all.

I purchased the 'Ulla Simple Drinking reminder' for my mother who has dementia. She is now in a nursing home and has very late set dementia so it is not as useful as it could have been had I purchased earlier in her dementia. Despite this it is a useful product.

We have just moved house so it is difficult to say how useful it is for my husband who has dementia as we need to adjust into a routine again. Works brilliantly as a general reminder to drink more water though. My sister has one (who does not have dementia) and uses it all the time!
