Oscar loves Grandma, and their time together is always lots of fun. As she becomes less able to look after herself, she has to go into a care home. More and more children are encountering dementia and its effects on their families. This touching story, told in Oscar's own words, is a positive and practical tale about the experience. The factual page about dementia helps children talk about their feelings and find new ways to enjoy the changing relationship. Jessica Shepherd's sensitive first picture book has grown out of her experiences in a variety of caring roles.

Children are often smarter than we think.

    Ms. Daphne Simpson

Having four children of my own I can say that it never ceases to amaze me how much information they can gather just by watching what's going on around them. They are quick to pick up on things like an argument my husband and I think we have handled quietly or our excitement about an upcoming family holiday that we think is going to be a complete surprise. So, when things are amiss in the family regarding the health of a loved one it is not hard to see how it can quickly affect them. Our uncertainty causes them to worry and feel scared too. I experienced this with my own son as my dad was dying from leukaemia. I was so focused on my devastation that I failed to see his. That was until a friend of mine gave me a book similar to this about cancer. It allowed me to explain to my son, in very simple terms, what was happening. Intended for a child, not only did it help him, it helped me too. And while dementia is something very different to cancer the concept of including our children and taking into consideration their feelings is the same.
