Waking up in the morning, especially during winter, can be difficult when you’re warm and toasty in bed and it’s cold and dark outside. But it can be even harder if you have dementia, because changes within the brain can disturb your body’s circadian rhythm (body clock).

A person with dementia may have woken and got up repeatedly during the night, so by the time it’s morning, they could be confused and exhausted. What’s more, in winter, it stays dark outside for longer, so they may think it’s still the middle of the night.

The Lumie Bodyclock Active 250 is a dawn light simulator to help you wake up more easily. The lamp gives off a natural light which gets gradually brighter to slowly wake someone up each morning. Even when you’re asleep, your eyes can detect the light, and it acts as a signal for the body to reduce the production of sleep hormones (melatonin) and increase the wake-up hormone (cortisol).

In a 2003 Swiss study*, patients with dementia were exposed to simulated sunset and sunrise (the simulator began decreasing the light intensity approximately 45 minutes before bedtime and increasing light intensity approximately 30 minutes before awakening); this treatment decreased the time it took to fall asleep and increased sleep duration.

The lamp also has an FM radio so you can wake up to your favourite station, or alternatively, select relaxing sounds such as white noise, waves or a dawn chorus.

Features: - 15, 20, 30, 45, 60 or 90-minute sunrise to wake naturally - 15, 20, 30, 45, 60 or 90-minute sunset to wind down for bed - FM radio with digital tuning - Relaxing white noise, waves, or dawn chorus settings - Sun ray effect - Dimmable lighting for use as a bedside light - Nightlight feature - Snooze feature - Security option to turn on the light randomly while you're away - Back-ups: optional alarm beep, power failure back-up
